Historical document, this is the rare testimony of the first exhibition (in the historical sense) devoted to Graffiti, accompanied by a catalog and organized at the Artists Space in Wooster Street in New York (September 1975). The first uncatalogued exhibition was the one organized in 1973 at the Razor Gallery in Soho (with the UGA).
United Graffiti Artists was founded in 1972 by student and artist Hugo Martinez. The UGA was a successful attempt to legitimize an artistic movement that emerged in the late 1960s. The first members of the group were Phase 2, Stay High 149, SJK 171, Taki 183, Henry 161 and Mike 171, Cat 87, Colt, Coco 144. In the mid-1970s, the UGA became an institution in charge of promoting official events with the support of New York City. These are decisive years for Graffiti, it is at this time that the bases or visual codes and stylistic innovations (still used today) are put in place.
