The boombox (which we also know under the name of Ghetto-blaster) is one of the great symbols of rock and hip-hop culture of the late 1970s and early 1980s. This book traces the history of this object and the impact it had particularly on the hip-hop movement (and one of its disciplines: break-dancing). Illustrated with a hundred models, archives, anecdotes, The Boombox Project is also the story of a culture that is now in the process of reappearing: that of the cassette. Lyle Owerko gives voice to many actors and pioneers: Spike Lee (how not to think of Do the Right thing…), Bob Gruen, Rahzel, Jamel Shabazz, Beastie Boys, Kool Moe Dee, J-Zone, Stretch Armstrong , LL Cool J… An exciting book.
