In 1978, Iain McKell, a young graduate student, began to take an interest in the skinhead movement and hung out in certain areas of London, particularly in the north and east of the English capital. He takes some pictures there which he decides to publish in a small square book. Self-published initially in 1979 and distributed in very few copies (around 250 instead of the 1,000 advertised), Subculture has long been a myth because it was so difficult to find. In 2015, in partnership with Wild Life press, Iain McKell decided to bring out the few copies he had left in his archives to put them on sale again in new packaging. Only 150 copies printed and accompanied by a signed photographic print, the book was quickly sold out, but this initiative allowed some collectors to (finally) get their hands on a cult “object”.
