His series New York Up and Down, shot in the 1980s, is therefore a personal homage to the vibrant metropolis in all its facets, from the socialites strolling in Central Park or sipping coffee behind a window, to the shabby subway cars covered in graffiti and the homeless looking for a place to sleep. “I went there twice a year, in summer and winter, when the city is at its most unpleasant,” he explains, recalling his use of suggestion. “The off-screen has always been important,” he explains, “it allows you to imagine what is not represented. The only thing that awakens the imagination is what is not shown, what is outside the frame.”
