Graffiti Tribute (1984)

“Remember Michael Stewart” Original large Flyer, New York, 1984. 35 x 21 cm. Condition : Excellent.

Out of stock

Very rare flyer concerning an event at the Food Stamp Gallery (south of East Harlem in New York) in tribute to Michael Stewart, the first martyr in the history of Graffiti. Stewart was an African-American man who was killed following an arrest by New York City Transit Police for writing graffiti in a soft-tip marker or using a spray can on a New York City subway wall at the First Avenue Station. Many artists then paid tribute to this victim of police brutality: Basquiat, Lou Reed, Keith Haring and Spike Lee who dedicated the film Do the Right Thing to him in 1989. Rare document.
