In terms of the media, 1982 was a boom year for Hip Hop. The New York media are beginning to relay The echoes that come from the Bronx and other neighborhoods. Hip Hop becomes a subject and its place is recognized. This issue of the East Village Eye is the first to use the term Hip Hop and has devoted many pages to this young movement: interview with Fab 5 Freddy and Afrika Bambaataa, graffiti in the middle pages of Futura 2000, graffiti by Lee Quinones on the cover, photographic report on Rock Steady Crew by Lisa Kahane, photograph by Grandmaster Flash, report on Hip-Hop fashion… This issue is historically important since it is in a way the birth certificate of a musical movement which forty years later has become essential.
