New York photographer, native of the Bronx, Lisa Kahane has collaborated since the end of the 70s with many media (New-York Times, East Village Eye, New York Observer, Art Forum, Art News, Interview…). In this book, she opens her archives on her native neighborhood (where she still lives). Almost a decade of magnificent shots on this district of the South-Bronx which was for a long time a no man’s land but also the nerve center of the hip-hop phenomenon. If the photographs do not ignore the difficult living conditions of its inhabitants, the work of Lisa Kahane also suggests a lively, sometimes warm neighborhood life, and just like the work of Jamel Shabazz, tinged with humanism. A really successful book, a very interesting testimony on the Bronx, which has become difficult to find.
