In France, the year 1984 definitely marks the landing of hip-hop culture. First with the Sidney show on the first channel and with the cinema release of Beat Street. Beat Street is a 1984 American dance drama film featuring the New York hip hop culture of the early 1980s. Set in the South Bronx, the film follows the lives of two brothers and their group of friends, all of whom are dedicated to various elements of early hip hop culture, including breakdancing, DJing and graffiti. There are several performances in the film, including early established hip hop groups, Grandmaster Melle Mel & the Furious Five, Doug E. Fresh, Afrika Bambaataa & Soulsonic Force, and the Treacherous Three. As a member of the Treacherous Three, Kool Moe Dee also appeared in the film.
If purists have always preferred Wild Style for its raw energy and authenticity, Beat Street is still remembered.
