Self-Hypnosis features both black and white and color photographs from Ed Templeton’s photo archive, exploring our existence in and around cars and car culture. We are inescapably bound to the automobile from birth, beginning with being literally strapped against our will into car seats as children, to becoming a symbol of freedom and autonomy by adolescence. Templeton’s photographs explore the car as a cage, as a tool to alleviate boredom, as a deadly weapon, and as a window to watch the world go by. The car is both a fetishized object and a utilitarian tool, something we live inside and use as a prop for fashion magazines. Templeton has long used the car window as a framing device for his photographs both indoors and outdoors, further fetishizing the culture surrounding them.
