If there is a book that perfectly illustrates and testifies to the energy that shook New York in the early 1980s, largely through the Hip-Hop movement, Shabazz’s would be one of the absolute references. However, the subject does not relate to the disciplines of hip-hop (graffiti, breakdance, MCing, DJing) but on the atmosphere and particularly the styles which are specific to it. A style with its codes, brands and attitudes. But what is most striking in Shabazz’s photographs is the positive energy that emanates from them, inherited from the “Peace, Unity, Love and Havin ‘fun” of the Zulu nation of Afrika Bambaataa. A real gem.
