Tunisian and raised in France, Colette-Justine was a major figure in the New York avant-garde of the 1970s as a musician, filmmaker, photographer and painter. His most radical and best-known practice was that of transforming his own life into a work of art (photographic tableau vivant), following a strange fictional narrative of his own creation and assuming a number of different identities and personas. This process began in 1978 when Colette declared herself dead, held her funeral at the Mudd Club, and then was resurrected as Justine.
